Finally, the date of the Wladimir Klitschko and Anthony Joshua IBO and WBA (super) heavyweight world championship fight was announced for the 29th April 2017 at Wembley. It promised to be the boxing event of the year.
The experienced and dominant Klitschko was seeking to reclaim a title for the first time in over a decade and Anthony Joshua was looking to seal his place in history and consolidate his other recent title wins.
Tyson Fury, the suspended previous holder of the titles, could only watch with the global TV audience and the 90000-strong crowd. Having vacated the WBA, IBO and WBO titles, Fury appreciated that by the end of the bout his former crowns would be in the possession of either his proven adversary or the fast rising star.
Anthony Joshua had already become the Olympic superweight champion and IBF heavyweight world champion and although in his opinion his fight performance was not perfect, he took the titles in the 11th round with a hefty uppercut and a match stoppage.
The match delivered passion, heart stopping moments, fire and ice. It was well worth the hype. The powerhouse that is Wladimir Klitschko was forced to accept defeat, only the fifth one of his professional career. He hasn’t ruled out a rematch though.
Tyson Fury took to social media to express his interest in taking on the new champion and praise was heaped on to Joshua from around the globe from past boxers, the public and celebrities. Deontay Wilder, WBC world title holder warned Joshua not to get too comfortable. His potential opponents are queuing up and boxing promoter Eddie Hearn believes that Anthony Joshua is now “stratospheric.”
There’s little chance that Joshua, or Klitschko, will fade from the scene any time soon so we’ll have to wait and watch as titles are contested in the future to see who triumphs. Will it be Joshua, previous holders Klitschko and Fury or another rising hopeful who holds the titles in years to come?
